Soup Day was written by Melissa Iwai last year about a little girl who goes with her mother to pick up vegetables at the store and then helps her make soup for dinner.

I help Mommy pick out the vegetables,
She says it's important to choose the
freshest ones with the brightest colors.

I loved this book as it shares the experience the little girl and her mother have cooking together in the kitchen. During the story she describes the recipe by using descriptive words like 3 long orange carrots - and each carrot is bright orange, individually drawn and your kids can stop and point to each and count them out. She talks about how each vegetable is washed and cut for the soup. "The celery and onions become tiny squares." She even tells us how she got to cut the mushrooms and zucchini with mommy's help (and a plastic knife).

At the end of the book is the recipe for the vegetable soup she made with her mommy's help. Melissa has put together a great video with tips for making the soup with your child and she also tells us about different concepts such as measuring, colors, counting, etc... I also loved how the book uses very bright colors and big shapes for older toddlers and preschoolers ~ and the pages are wonderfully thick making it easier for kids to turn the pages with ease.
